Is there a book that is like a ' dummies guide to medicine'?

I am just hoping to understand medicine at a really really basic level... any recommendations?

I wouldn't have thought so. Such a book could be used to self medicate without considering a full medical history and the ramifications of interactions between drugs, and may be considered dangerous.

BMA Complete Family Health Guide is a really good book. I have used it a lot to help me grapple with difficult concepts as it has simple, accurate explanation, and for information about my own health.
