I am almost 30... the general public would surely deem me a normal person. But I suffer from these underlying issues as a result of a miserable childhood that deeply effect my relationship with the man I will marry. Can someone suggest a book I could look into that might help me explore such issues as self esteem, commitment, how to handle stress, etc. I just want to be able to breathe and feel happy!

  1. The best self-esteem book is by Nathaniel Brandon, "The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem.  A good book for stress is by Richard Carlson, "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff, And it's all small stuff."

  2. A Child Called It.

  3. "A Child Called It" by Dave Peltzer

Although your issues may bare no similarity to his, this book will give you a very courageous perspective on child abuse and how to overcome and be a successful, happy individual.

  4. "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert

It's the story of a woman's journey to her own self discovery, it is autobiographical, very well written, and may give you some excellent insight.

Don't let the "pray" put you off, it isn't about religion, it's about self discovery.

  5. BIBLE, 12 step book

  6. "The Angry Heart" will help you explore, address, and resolve many of your childhood traumas and issues that are affecting your life today.  The title doesn't necessarily imply that you are angry, either. :)

The first part of the book has you exploring your childhood, and the second part of the book provides solutions, skills, and tools to use to help you recover from your childhood and prevent the past from messing with your present.  It gives you tools to gain control over your emotions and life.
