There is a Border Patrol stop north bound south of Corpus, but not north of Corpus.

You can travel between Corpus and Austin and only have to worry about the highway patrol and local police.

No.  

There are mandatory border patrol stops on Hwy 90 heading west from San Antonio toward Del Rio.  I think there is one just before Del Rio and then another quite a bit after Del Rio, then another couple of mandatory stops as you travel further west and near Big Bend.  

I'm not aware of any between Austin and Corpus.
