Mexico has a wonderful bus system.  Buses are far better, cleaner, more comfortable than Greyhound, and very safe.  You can leave from a Texas city or the Mexican side of the border.  I really like to leave from McAllen best.  The station there is new, clean, well-staffed, and has several excellent bus lines serving it.  The best way to go, is to go through Mexico City.  You will have far fewer stops if you do that.  I really like to use Senda bus from Mc Allen to Mexico City.  Then you can use ADO  to Cancun...it is the best line going east.  There are 1st class buses which are very nice, and luxury buses for a bit more, that are even better.  See sites below.  You can buy tickets on line or at the station.  There are several departures a day from Mc Allen and many from Mexico City.  There are 4 huge bus stations in Mexico City that receive buses from different parts of the country.  To avoid having to change bus stations in Mexico city, you need to get an ADO bus that is leaving from the NORTE station to go east...because the Senda bus will arrive in the Norte station.  The Senda site is only in Spanish. so if you do not speak Spanish, you would need a Spanish speaking friend to help you with it.  In the station at McAllen, of course, all staff are bilingual.

I took the ETN from San Miguel de Allende to Mexico City. It was very comfortable. You need to make sure you are taking a luxury bus with air conditioning. You might not get the same bus company all the way through but that doesn't really matter.
