My 22 yr. old daughter is taking my 12 year old daughter on a trip to LA and they need a Rental Car.

But we are running into some problems...

The Rental Car companies I've looked at online won't allow someone under 25 yrs.old to rent a car unless they have a Credit Card.

My daughter only has a Debit Card - which will have plenty of $$ on it ( it's a bank Debit Card)

I'm willing to put the rental On my Credit Card, but in order for me to do that they say that I need to be their...which I won't b/c I will be in Michigan..

I cannot pay for it online, or over the phone Because the "Card holder" has to be the one who picks up the car...

Grrrr

So does anyone know if any of the Rental card places allow a rental with a debit card alone.

Any advice is welcome

Thanks

  1. Unfortunately, all of the rental places will give you the same answer unless if you can find a non-everywhere one (like hertz, alamo, budget.) They might... and stress the word might... let you use a debit card if you tell them it's also a credit card as well (since it is.) BUT... and there's the catch... she will be paying VERY higher rates because she is 22. (I'm 23 and they even were picky about me doing it.) And they are very picky about who signs for the card.

  2. Normally the rental company wants the credit card to be in the DRIVERS name and over the age of 25. When I was still in my 60's I couldn't rent a car with my wife standing next to me because my name was not the card even though I was a signer at the card company and I  was going to be the driver.

They need the card in case something happens to the car.

  3. Most debit cards are slash credit as well so it may work. the only reason they need a card is so if anything happens they can trace the card or charge the card for any damages so i think the debit should work...and some do business with 18 and up but most deal with 25...why don't you ask a parent or older friend to sign for you and use their own card and you just give the friend or whoever the cash ... i dunno but it would have to be someone that will trust you because if anything happens to the car it is in their name and not yours...so it's a thinker...
