  1. it does not have to rhyme

and a poem doesnt have to be in a format unless you want it to be

    like haiku...

but like all my poetry... just flows

    doesnt follow any format

    and mostly doesnt rhyme

  2. I absolutely does NOT have to rhyme. Unless you're writing  dirty limerick, end rhyme died with queen Victoria. The message is MUCH more important than letting rhyme dictate your meter and word choices. Ugh!

Try using interior rhyme if you must and put line breaks where they sound right (read aloud). Look for a flow, like waves against the hull of a boat. Its really not as hard as some people make it sound. Think reggae beats.

  3. If you're going to write a sonnet, a villanelle, a limerick, a Haiku, etc., then there "is" a specific form. However, if you want to know if there is a specific rule about "any" poem, the answer is "no".  Poems can rhyme or not rhyme (free or open verse).  The thing that separates poetry from prose is the use of poetic devices...metaphor, simile, rhyme, hyperbole, alliteration, etc.  When you say, "the sun rose at six in the morning", it's "prose", but if you say, "the guardian of the East rose brightly over the hills to start the day", that's poetry.  There is a fine line between the two, and it takes more than just line breaks to make a "real poem", but poetry is often like pornography...you can't describe the difference between it and art, but you recognize it when you see it...the same holds true for poetry :)  So, if you've already written the poem, and assuming it isn't a "form specific" kind of poem, then it's probably fine the way it is.

  4. don't listen to the first answerer...its pure ignorance that thinks poetry has to rhyme..it can and can help your poem..but if it is forced it sounds terrible. poetry is generally a very free form of writing though there are different set structures u can adopt...however structurelses poetry can be beautiful too...the main thing that sets poetry apart from other forms of writing is that it is generally punchy, compressed and written in lines and stanzas.

  5. yep,you need to make the words rhyme.
