I have an idea for a website that provides a service that has not been invented and I would like to obtain a patent for the service. Is there any way to do this, where do I go?

  1. You may want to inquire at your local library about resources for small businesses.  The chamber of Commerce may also be able to point you in the right direction.  Good luck.

  2. Go to www.uspto.gov to find information about patents.  There are numerous requirements to obtain a patent on an invention.  It may be best to find a patent attorney to assist you.  Try http://www.martindale.com/ (somewhat biased towards people willing to spend money to advertise) or https://oedci.uspto.gov/OEDCI/ (unbiased PTO listing).

It is unclear from your description whether your invention will be patentable, but simply stated, your invention must be a new (and non-obvious) and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereor.  See 35 USC 101.
