If you stay at one of the Disney Hotels, you have access to the park an hour before the general crowd and an hour afterwards.

I would definitely go at least an hour early.

I usually enter the park around 6pm and I always enter the gate furthest away from Downtown Disney where it's usually less crowded.

The best time to get there is first thing in the morning about an hour before they open and then as for the specific gate they really only have one main gate but several turn stiles to go thru...I love going thru the one that Esther is working in she's an amazing cast member along with Mary, Anna, Phil, and others!

Disneyland only has one area of gate access.   Whenever I go I try to get there about 45 min to an hour before it opens so you get towards the front of the line.  They start letting people in early but they only let you on main street then they open the rest of the park... its fun to be in that crowd when they open the park for the day just hold on to everyone in your group especially little ones because they can get separated from you really easily.
