Is there a charity that specifically takes donated musical instruments?

I have heard of charities that accept donated musical instruments and give them to those who cannot afford them, but would dearly love to learn how to play. (I live in Victoria, Australia). My piano was made in the 1800's. I don't have time to play it and my kids don't want to learn. It only needs a tune up, other wise it is in working order (it has an iron frame). I want to give it to a charity specifically for this purpose. I don't want to give it to just anyone, who says that they do want it for that purpose, only to sell it to pay off debts or similar. It was given to me, when I was a child and I want to give the gift of music to another.

  1. Tht is very kind of you and I agree, be very careful wiith your donation so it does not fall into the wrong hands.  When I was a toddler, my Grandmother donated her Hamburg Steinway (which was her grandfather's) to her University. When I became a professional musician, I tried to get it back.  I was willing to purchase them another Steinway to be fair.  Long story short, after years of no maintenance, they sold it to a restorer who made a huge profit and a family  heirloom as been lost.  I am rambling on only to express how difficult it can be to donate something valuable, no matter if it is a University or other reputable institution.  I am in the US, but if there is a music Conservatory near you, a top-notch one,  that could be a nice place to contact.

Also, you might want to google the makers name, to see the monetary value.   The iron frame sounds unusual to me?  If it is not worth a lot of money or if it is not "right" for professional level playing, perhaps there is a center for underpriveleged children where it could be used for lessons after school?  I love those programs and they do a lot of good for young people and you would be proving the gift of music of which you mentioned.  Anyway, best of luck!
