I live in wisconsin, so a nearby place would be convenient.

  1. I just did mine for 200, but im in texas. call around and see what kind of deals the shops around you offer. I found that my class gave a $50 discount if you bought your gear through them (on top of a 10% student discount for the gear). Also, there are sometimes padi coupons so see what you can find on the internet.

  2. What does the $300 dollars cover?

The dive shop I work for charges (approx. values):

$200 - group pool and classroom instruction (private classes are more expensive)

$200 - group open water check out dives

$200 - for the basic mask, fin, boots, and snorkle package

So if you show up with nothing, then it will cost about $600 for the complete certification.  No matter where you go for your PADI certification you will need at a bare minimum the three aforementioned items.

  3. Not really.  300 is right on if not a little lower than the norm.  Your books might be more too.  The $300 for the class should'nt be your financial worries.  Wait till you have to buy your equipment.  It is all SO worth it though.
