Question:

Is there a clearcoat sealer which has no sheen that can be used over painted finishes?

I'm doing a faux wood graining job to match american walnut plank flooring which has been finished with tung oil.. It has no sheen to speak of, but I have to seal my work with something! It has to be oil based poly, or perhaps wax but the lowest sheen of oil based poly is satin and it looks way glossy. Has anyone ever used tung oil over a painted finish? I don't know what the results would be considering it is intended for raw wood. Does anyone out there know of another method for sealing painted finishes without adding gloss?

Thanks!

  1. Must it be oil?  If you can't find it at the hardware store, try an art supply store.  There are matte finish varnishes that are used over oil paintings.   But it will be more expensive at the art store.

There is a website you might check:  Wetcanvas.com  There is a forum there for people who do faux finishes, lots of pros.  They would probably have great ideas for you about covering your work.

  2. First of all, nearly all things sold as Tung Oil Finish are not tung oil, zero, zip.  Most are thinned varnish or oil-varnish blends.  Putting oil over a painted finish is going to amber it somewhat.

I use lacquers in either dead flat (<5 degree sheen) or "simulated oil" (near zero sheen).  The problem with these is if you put it on too heavy, the solvents in the lacquer can wrinkle paint (assuming it's not pigmented lacquer).

So you might look at at art supply store for something like this:

  3. polyurethane,it comes in different finishes, from flat to high gloss
