  1. Of course there is. The segment of the population that supports and embraces the mentioned movements are an educated, empathetic, compassionate and intelligent group. They understand that we are all in this together and we should work as a team to promote equality and the preservation of our planet.

  2. Yes, it's very simple. Heart. Caring. Love.

  3. Well I was hoping that one of our permaculturists would answer this because they can do it more accurately than I can.  The best example I can give of how these causes inter-relate is through permaculture.

If everyone grew their own food we'd be supporting environmental integrity, gender justice, humanitarianism, and animal rights at the same time.  Food items that travel thousands of miles leave a huge carbon foot-print, support un-fair trade in third- world countries, perpetuating poverty, and raping wildlife of their natural habitat. We can all make a huge difference simply by eating green and local.

Another form of gender justice that often gets overlooked is that of female livestock.  No one human or otherwise should be forced to ovulate or forced to term through arti-ficial insemination. Nor should these animals be force fed the equivalent of steroids for the promotion of unnatural growth.  This in turn impacts the kids who eat genetically modified meat and produce.  Everyone knows that children are having to deal with early onset of puberty because of the food supply.

Those are just a couple ways the issues you presented in your question overlap.

Edit- A couple of last things I forgot to mention. Animal rights and humanitarianism are definitely related when it comes to vivi-section.  Part of the reason that involuntary experiments have occurred on humans ( i.e. pharmaceutical drug experimentation on third world natives, and the Tuskegee experiment) is because  we have the attitude that it's ok to test on apes, rats, etc.  If you view another human as sub-human and subcribe to the idea that certain ethnic groups are more primate than homo-sapien you'll justify testing on humans as well.

It's hard on the psychology of immigrants who work in abitoires. Imagine  the affects on one's psyche of having to decapitate and skin animals alive every day.  It's been documented by field socialologists that households with a spouse working in an abitoire have a higher rate of domestic and child abuse.

Thanx to  Perma-culture Byderule for his clarifications and corrections.

  4. Bleeding Heart, Tree Hugging ,Liberal Democrats.

  5. No.  Environmentalists and animal rights activists are quite indifferent to human rights, they care only for animals.  They often hate human beings like poison.

  6. I believe they all involve people with to much time on their hands.

  7. i think there is, and at the root of that belief is the reason why many practice and study these philosophies:  a shared sense of caring and fairness and a belief about the way in which the world should conduct itself.  providing a voice for the voiceless, and studying oppressors and oppressed is what ties all of these subject areas together.

one who believes in a fairness for all of the world's creatures, no matter how powerful or weak, strives to find ways to balance the playing field.  this doesn't necessarily fly in the face of 'survival of  the fittest' as seen in the food chain in nature, but it does abhor the unfair wanton wasting of fellow creation only for gratification, or the betterment of oneself.

hunt for food if you must, but do not practice genocide on your fellow creatures.  seek equal opportunity for all regardless of background, but do not seek crisis or division where there is none.   seeking justice for all god's creations, learning about and delighting in the diversity found on earth, and promoting that knowledge and sharing it with others... are all aspects of the reality and fairness which god intended when he created this earth and her inhabitants, and  the seven deadly sins are the polar opposites.

  8. They all sound pretty decent and doggedly desirable to me ~

  9. Animal rights and environmentalism often have conflicting views. For instance, wind mills, which are an increasingly popular alternate energy source, often have to be placed in the migration route of birds to maximize power, killing thousands or millions of birds each year. Sometimes, though, they intersect. Cows produce a lot of methane, so to destroy the meat industry would be to reduce toxins on the earth.

People who are conscious of gender justice are generally humanitarians, so those two things are tied together. I don't know that they tie in to the other two. Certainly, people who are involved in these things generally (I said generally, not always!) tend to be left-leaning, so they are more likely to learn about these other important issues.

  10. Well I think many who support one, probably support at least one of the others.  But I do not know of any Historical connections between all four of these.

  11. No. Between gender justice and humanitarianism yes. Certainly animal rights is an important issue but it bears no resembliance between itself and gender justice.  Again, being humane and animal rights go hand in hand.

  12. They all have the letter N in them.

  13. "the greatness of a nation and it's moral progress can be judged by the way it's animals are treated" ...Gandhi

  14. Yes, I think that if you are a caring and thoughtful person you don't want anyone to be discriminated against and also you wouldn't want animals to be treated badly or our precious environment to be destroyed.

That's why i would say I'm an equalist because I'm very passionate about protecting the envronment and animal welfare.

    EDIT: Asweel as obviously humans!

  15. Yes. They are all serious issues that cranks flock to.

  16. I think there's a significant connection between them. They all have in common the practice of humility, compassion and respect.

  17. There's no way to find the answer through history or rational cause-effect relations as if things like the ones you list should form a logical set of choices that makes it necessary to take one if you take the other. But the fact most believe it necessary to try gives you part of the solution.

What we find in modern advocacy or activist movements is the development of a secular moral that will eventually substitute religious morals as a means to define a common language for human understanding.

  18. Anecdotally, yes. I have never met anyone concerned about any one of those things who didn't have at least some concern about the others, even if they did not engage in activism in them.

  19. Perhaps the connection in people's minds is a recognition of just how hugely complex and fragile our world and its inhabitants actually are.

And a desire to ensure that fragile beauty is not sold up the stream for tuppence happeny in some rich guy's pocket, without thinking it through.

    Best wishes :-)

  20. Permaculture recognizes animals, insects ,even micro organisms as necessary components often as collaborators ,

The idea is to move with Nature`s forces, utilizing them as much as possible ,

When ever possible they are part and parcel of the concept. So that generously takes care of animal rights .Even insect rights and worm rights.

If the above is pursued Environmental integrity has to be  the result.

All of this is done to improve the quality of life for Humans .to seek a way whereby we can live in harmony with Nature both Nature and humans benefiting,as much as possible  ,because with both concepts in a strong position ,both can perform  the best,

So I think we have covered humanitarianism with that.

    So yes everything overlaps

The chemical interference two socks mentioned applies to both genders in Animals.

As for the carbon foot print.i will give an example.of Vietnam, the Government encourages Permaculture.

giving advice ,seeds and maybe helps with tools .

People who before traveled far to make some money to buy food ,now stay at home and produce it ,taking the strain of public transport ,and subsequently the health services

because of a healthier ,less stressful life ,avoiding any rush hour ailments .(I am sticking my neck out here ,this is What Bill Mollison told us)

imagine all the foot prints a modern society would save ,by staying at home and making the best of it right there.

And one thing is for sure ,if millions more would grow their own food ,corporate farming will become far less, and that would really save a lot of Environment

I do not understand why gender justice is even mentioned ,

,the last i heard women were the same species as us ,after all what is the real difference between women and men it is just the wo(e)

don`t say it is breast ,many old men have b*****s

Men can even have babies these days,or wear make up (I dont)

,If we can respect bugs ,we can also respect women.

that may have come out wrong,

Some women i know are a lot tougher than a lot of men.

Maybe its time to shut up

  21. yes animals are mens best friendssssssssss

  22. Greed is certainly one common thread.  Lack of respect, consideration and compassion are also.
