light would be an advantage - I ride the train part of the way which requires a large amount of bike lifting and shuffling. If so what is it?

  3. First of all, if you're not an experienced rider, you may be better off with a hybrid or cafe bike for your commute than a road bike. They are more comfortable to ride and about as light as a low end road bike.

If you don't have a lot of $$, try bikesdirect.com.  This is a decent bike for your around price range.

this bike will need a small amount of assembly though, so find a friend who is handy with bikes to help you.

Whatever you do, don't buy a Walmart bike. You will spend more fixing it than buying it in the first place.

  4. Yes, Bikes Direct has 4 or 5 decent road bikes that are $400 or less delivered.

I know at least 6 people here in Atlanta who have bought from them and been very happy.  The bikes are shipped assembled but broken down, and are very easy for a person with minimal skills to get road ready.

  5. Sorry, no. Even an entry level bike like a Giant OCR will cost over $600. You might find something used for that price, but it won't be easy.
