  1. Rose, you do know Psychologists can't prescribe medication and if anything is annoying them enough to see a therapist then it's worth looking into?

And yes. psychologists will always be in demand, it's one of the few things that cannot be replaced by machines.

  2. Well, I disagree with the poster's above attitude about helping patients. Parents want to send their kids to therapist when a little discipline would have done the trick? What about the reverse, where parents were abusive, what they thought was "discipline" and they do mess up their kids later in life.

I encourage you to follow your passions, psychology degrees can be useful in other fields too, you may need some additional study in another field however, or job training.

I believe that as a counsellor, you should generally want to help people with their problems and not be condescending or rude to them. I think if you want to help people, then it can be a good thing to pursue.

  3. In today's world, there is ALWAYS a demand for psychologists.  People think they need medication any time they experience something they don't particularly like.  Parents put their children through years of expensive therapy to "cure" the same problems that a little bit of discipline could take care of.

In a time when almost everyone is a hypochondriac, there is always need for a person who can tell someone what they want to hear.

  4. As is the case of any profession, that could vary depending on the place in which you live.

For example, in Argentina, my country, exists an over demand for this profession, it's already the country with the most psychologists in the world. There are 154 professionals for each 100,000 inhabitants, in other words, 649 people per psychologist. (and we are counting around 5,000 psychiatrists). In my city, Buenos Aires, the greatest concentration of professionals in this field is found, with an average of 828 professionals per 100,000 people.

Setting aside the strictly vocational aspect (certainly very important), my advice is that you must look up statistical data for the country and / or city where you have considerend practicing the profession, to make a wise decision.

I hope I've been of some help =)

    Good luck in your choice!
