  1. A smartphone is a pda with a cell phone built in.

Basically the difference is communication, as the smartphone has built in phone and often internet (through the phone).

Whereas a PDA is just a portable computer, with no phone, and if you want internet you had to add something extra (like use a serial cable to connect to your cell phone to access the internet)

  2. Yes (i reckon)

the PDA is a touch (or not) and its got calenders and organizers.

Smartphones run on an OS like Windows... well it looks like windows......

  3. U can use this as a ref for most PocketPC related tech terms : http://www.1800pocketpc.com/glossary

PDA - Personal Digital Assistant ( in the true sense does not have phone module , like the old palm os PDA )

Smartphone - Smartphone is a mobile phone which offers advanced capabilities like that of a PC. It has a phone module and OS like , Symbian s60 , Windows Mobile Standard etc. Generally  without a touch screen

many of the terms like XDA, PPC , Smart phone , PDA , cell phone etc are used interchangeably  but they are not exactly the same thing

  4. A pda used to be a separate handheld device like a palm pilot or dell axim etc with touchscreen , sync capability

    ,notepad ,address book etc.

Now that a lot of other devices will do the same things  they are grouped together and all called pda's

A smartphone technically would not have been one (non touchscreen) but now it can be .
