  1. a detention center is the place that the defendants are held before they have their trials.  after they are tried... then they are convicted and sent to a jail or a prison based on the severity of the charges.

  2. Detention and jail are basically the same, it pre-trial. Prison is post convection. This has nothing to do with terrorists.

  3. Jails confines persons accused of crimes. awaiting trial. or convicted of a crime. Jails exist on the local and county levels.

Detention is custody occurring while the police are deciding whether or not to arrest you.  To detain you, the police are supposed to have a reasonable suspicion that you’re involved in a crime.

A detention center .. for example, a juvenile detention center -

is usually a maximum-security facility designed to house  juveniles who are in need of being detained in a restrictive environment. These youth are either alleged to be delinquent  - or have been adjudicated delinquent.
