A light novel is the original adaptation of an author's story, while manga is just the simplied versions with lots of pictures.

Similarities:

-They are both published/serialized in monthly magazines.

-They are both read to right and left

Now the differences between these two are:

-light novels contains words in paragraphs and typical beginning of a story have some illustrations
