I know ultimately the guns are the same but is there a difference between them, like how the respective metal behaves or anything, or the finish. does the stainless steel change anything. been looking into a Springfield Xd 40 and noticed this. i think the bi-tone looks nice, any oe has any comments on them, let me hear it, any dislikes or likes?

  1. XDs are great handguns. And really there is no difference between any of the finished outside of appearance. They can be treated and cleaned the same.

  2. S.A.D. is right, that it basically comes down to personal preference.  On the XD, since the frame is tupperware (plastic), there is no functional difference whatsoever.  However, on an all metal gun, stainless is known for galling, a condition of heavy wear, when not lubricated properly.

Not all "silver" on a gun is stainless, either.  In some cases, it may be chrome (hard or brushed), or nickel plated.  Typically, these coatings are used to mitigate corrosion or rust.

  3. Steel rusts

Stainless Steel also rusts but at a much slower rate

    (think snail and jackrabbit)

It comes down to color and personal preference.
