Is there a difference between crawfish and crawdads?

i spent some time working in louisiana and fell in love with eating crawfish. here in the midwest we have crawdads that we use as catfish bait, are these the same? and if not are they edible?

  1. Nope, depends on where you are from. I am from Texas and my mother calls the crawfish, so there you go....

  3. No difference, same thing. Different items are called by different names in different regions. Think about sandwiches, some are called subs, some are called grinders, hoagies, etc.

  5. Yeah...all the same.  I was born and raised in eastern N.C. We called them "CRAYfish" but also "CRAWdads".  We didn't eat them much...boy was THAT a waste!!! We used them for bait or just left them alone.  Now I live In Tidewater Virginia and have discovered the joy of "tiny lobsters".  They are great...but there's not much to them except for the tails...YUM!!!  Crayfish soup - a kind of lobster bisque with crayfish tail meat is SO good!
