Is there a difference between "User CALs" and "Terminal Service CALs".... Or are they the same thing?

I've seen both posted and it seems like they are the same thing.

As in, a "Terminal Service USER CAL" or a "Terminal Service DEVICE CAL"

  1. A user cal is a client access license for a user.  Meaning as an administrator you would assign a user cal to one person.  That person has a license to for whatever the user cal was purchased at any computer on the network.  

    A device cal is a client access license for a device.  Meaning as an administrator you would assign a device cal to one PC.  Anyone who uses that PC can use that license.  Useful for a student lab, for example.


  2. There is a difference

    Users are client pcs that log into the domain directly and are on the same LAN usually.

    Terminal services users are those that remote in from off LAN (remote desktop log in)
