Plug in hybrids are similar in that the batteries can be recharged with a gasoline motor, but have larger (and heavier) batteries to hold a charge gained from plugging into an outlet at home.  Probably better than conventional hybrids for short commutes, but the weight is a disadvantage in gas mileage for long trips.
