Question:

Is there a difference if I use 4 gauge wire instead of 1/0 gauge for my amp?

hi my amps manual recommends I use 1/0 gauge wire for my ground and 12+.

The amp is an mtx thunder 1501d (1000 RMS @ 2ohms) but since I have two 4 ohm dvc I’m getting 500 RMS @ 4ohms.

So I would like to know if I still need to use 1/0 gauge wire, even though I’m getting only half the amps power??

(The reason why I didn’t use 1/0 gauge is that I didn’t have enough, I only had just enough for the 12+ but for the ground I used 4 gauge.)

I haven’t played the amp yet worried something might go wrong…??

(all the rest is wired correctly)

  1. in theory you could reduce the wire size where they are separate to each speaker by 1/swqrt2 of the original size in dia (in or mm)  in practice its easier to use one wire size throughout.  stop being a miser and do it right, that will sound better.  you could use a heavier wire if you wish.

  2. take that oct guage off if u dont have oct guage ground man.

1000 watts is OK for non wal mart 4 guage. actually, it goes by amps.  its a class D amp so ur guaranteed like 75% efficient. u could have about 1500 watts before u need new wire
