Question:

Is there a difference in these dog collars?

I was just reading a question about using a choker on 13 week old puppy and the general consensus was that it was dangerous to the pup.

I have a 16 week old Collie pup and will be starting to increase our walks next week...at some point she and I will be walking about 5 miles per day. Given that the walks will gradually become quite long, I need her to be leashed trained to perfection.

My questions is this...

I read about using a "slip" collar for training a puppy to walk on the leash. (This training method is in the book, "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete. This collar appears to be similar to a "choker", which I perceive as a metal/chain collar, but the slip collar is made of fabric/rope.

Are these the same thing?

Has anyone used one of these slip collars on their pup?

  1. Those sound like the same thing to me, just different material. I'm not sure if it's dangerous to use a slip or choke collar on a pup since they can only hurt themselves to the extent of their own strength, assuming you aren't yanking on the leash like a bully.

I would visit the vet and get their opinion. You could also meet with a dog trainer.

What does The Dog Whisperer say about choke or slip collars on pups?

Good luck with your new friend!

  2. I would look into taking your pup to a good trainer to recommend the proper collar for you.  There are also martingale collars that are popular.  I like the Halte collars or the Promise collars that work like a horse halter.  The difference between the fabric and chain collar is that the collar when applied and used right does not choke but does make a noise.

  3. There is a alot of difference in the leads and collars. using a slip lead is lighter and when the dog is not tugging the lead is nice and loose. When they pull it does create some discomfort but not in human. Just tug back on the Lead and use the command HEAL and most dogs walked for any length of time have it down in just a few times.

The chokers and chains are heavy and do not release as quick, also there intended for big aggressive dogs...you have a puppy and they learn super fast, just make sure you have a regular collar on in conjuntion with the slip lead just in case they slip out and run....

  4. I use the Halti's or just a regular collar for puppies.  You do not want to be jerking on the collar as it is when training.

Are you taking the pup to obedience classes?  The trainer will work with you to determine what is best for your pup.  If you want one that has to be trained to perfection (is there such a thing?), then make sure you go to training classes and go all the way through to advanced.  That way you insure the proper, positive way to train and use the right equipment.
