  1. As Richard said earlier, these are great engines.Mercury has

been using them for years, without any major problems. The cold running problem you are having could be many things, but

I think you are having a fuel problem and you are not alone.

This problem is a cause of bad fuel and the set-up of the carb.Mercury has had this problem for a while because to meet the emission standards of California they had to set the carbs this way.Which causes a very poor idling when cold

and when they are hot and you shut them off you get run-on.I have had a few that you could do nothing with and had to order a new carb. Most of them you can get to run by opening

the air jet a little.I am not sure if this is the problem you are having or not but good luck.

  2. i'm not just being funny here, but seriously try to sell it and get anything not made by ford. I am an automotive genius, a mechanical engineer, have worked for many companies and I know everything about cars and nothing about anything else but i can tell you ford just...sucks. please listen to me, don't question it just get rid of it and get a car made my chevrolet, or any of the imports. dodge and ford suck bad, and now that yours is getting older you are seeing the effects of the intense suck build quality and engineering. their cars are made for the masses, they use marketing gimmicks and other ploys to pass off their c**p product on the country. please, think for yourself and don't be brainwashed any longer. move on.

  3. These engines do not, I repeat , Do Not...have a reputation as being troublesome.  It may be fuel related, I've had a lot more of those this season than last, so, I'd look there but I would check the carb and ign. just in case.  If you have fuel partly left over from last year, see if you can rig an outboard tank an run the engine on fresh fuel.....Then we know!  Good Luck!!!

  4. try octane booster plus chang your sparkplugs to a hotter plug then it should help a lot use a higer octane gas
