the only direct flight from Lagos to anywhere in North America is -Atlanta (on delta airlines)

The only international flights in to and out of St. John's are to Newark (New Jersey USA), Saint-Pierre (France) and charter flights to the Carribbean. There are no flights to continental Europe or Africa. I believe you would have to fly into Montreal from Africa, and there is a flight direct from Montreal to St. John's.

Your best route might be to get to Toronto.  There are a number of flights from Toronto to St. John's everyday, and a number of them are direct.
