Is there a formal process to ending your relationship with the Public School system?

I have decided to homeschool my 1st grader. I live in Georgia. Does anyone know what I need to tell the school, or how I do it. I'm not sure I understand the whole process firing the school system. Am I entitled to any of the $8,000 allotted to each child in Public Schools, if I decide to do the teaching myself?

  1. I am in GA. All you have to do is go to your childs school and say you are withdrawing your child. THey will have you to sign a form.

Then, you will have 30 days to give the district superintendents office a 'intent to homeschool form' .

Here it is to print out -

This is all you have to do to inform the school.

You will have to fill out an attendance sheet once a month and give to the superintendent office.

I have been homeschooling for 3 yrs now and I've never heard of the $8000 ,, what's that about??

  2. Sorry, you won't get any of the money because you are teaching your child. But you will get the satisfaction of knowing you are doing something awesome for your child!

    Best of Luck to You!

  3. I'm sure you have good reasons to withdraw your child from public school, I know the standards seem to just get worse and worse.  But how about a partial withdrawal?  Maybe do half the day at home and half the day at school.  I know its possible because I went to school with kids who did that.  I'm only suggesting this because its important for kids to learn how to socialize at that age, especially in our society where what we learn about socializing in school seems to carry on into the work force.

Anyway, just a suggestion.  As for the details, I would contact your local school district headquarters secretary and ask that person, they will have the answers you're looking for.

    Good luck.
