  1. CALULATER

  2. square generally means to the second power so if the number your looking at

    8 square or 8 to the second power that means is 8 times 8

  3. Most square roots are irrational so no formula exists, however, there are various approximations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methods_of_...

  4. just press the button on the calculator

  5. Not really.

    y = √x

    or

    y = x^(0.5)

    Is what your formula would look like.

    If you're wanting a fast way to derive what √3 is, there are tables that will help you, but the fastest way is a calculator.

  6. Well, a square root can be thought of as a power of 1/2.  So 64^(1/2) = 8 and 8^2=64.  As for a formula that does not involve exponents, not so much, but there are a few methods for finding square roots by hand.

    If you only need a few digits of accuracy, then try squaring numbers and keep getting closer by finding values on each side of the target value.

    Let's try the square root of 72.  What squares are close to it?  9^2=81 is too big, but 8^2=64 is too small, so the answer is somewhere between 8 and 9.  Let's try 8.5.  8.5^2=72.25.  Wow!  That is really close, but a little too big.  Let's try 8.4.  8.4^2 = 70.56.  Too small.  Okay, let's go bigger.  Let's try 8.48. etc.  I think you get the idea from here.

    Another method looks kind of like long division.  The details can be found at the second link in my sources below.

    There is also Heron's method.  Click the first link in my sources for more information on it.

  7. There are rules but not formulas

  8. If you are familiar with preliminary differential calculus you can estimate accurately.

    good luck....
