Is there a formula or percentage to figure federal withholding tax??

I claim no dependants and single. But there seems to be not alot of logic behind the difference in the withholding for a smaller paycheck and larger.

  1. Go to www.irs.gov for details on your check, you can search "tax withholding" on the main page.  Also, you can use the site www.paycheckcity.com, and plug in your salary, dependents, etc and you should get your take home calcualted very accurately. Generally, if you are in the 15% tax bracket, each allowance on your W-4 with give you about $10 more per week in take home pay vs. withholding, it does not amount to much difference.


  2. Publication 15 has the payroll withholding tables contained therein.  You can go to IRS.GOV and look at one online or order one free for your own use.
