You can search public records which are free, from http://www.crimcheck.com. But since you would be doing the work yourself, that can lead to missing or inaccurate information so I would recommend paying the small fee for a background check. http://www.easybackgroundchecks.com does this for a very reasonable price and it's easy to use.

There are ways and techniques that you can use to get a free criminal background check online. Most of them involve using tools and resources that you already use everyday anyway.

The thing is though, how detailed of a report do you want?

If you really want to dig deep, chances are good that you might want to check out one of the public records databases online. You do not need a release signed by the person you are investigating or have anything at all signed like you do if you go to the police station.

Alot of states have open records websites - where you can put in the name and if a case exist it will pop up.

There aren't any for free, however if you go to www.v1g.org they have a few links to this site that offers over a dozen kind of background checks.. i've used it before and it was the cheapest I could find.. they also offer your money back if you don't like it.. good luck.
