  1. Newspaper archives generally are not free. Check with your local library or, if you're still in school, a local college. Libraries often subscribe to newspaper services which you can search for free when you are in the library -- and occasionally they allow at home access with your library card number as your password.  You're looking for a service like NewsBanks' "America's Obituaries and Death Notices"

Keep in mind that finding an obit depends on locating an archive for the deceased's local newspaper. If you're relative was in New York or Chicago -- not a problem. But if they were in a little town, use the Internet to locate the local library for that town. Then email the librarian to ask if they have newspapers for the year you need and if they will look up an obituary for you.

  2. If you want it for free you'll have to it the old fashion way. Visit your local library. The periodicals section should have old newspapers on micro film.
