  1. Your question is interesting. Are you referring to "Chess" ... the program provided with Windows Vista? If so, you are looking for the "Sjeng" chess engine which is I think free (although you will need to have Winboard, which is free, because most chess engines don't have their own Graphic User Interface).

    If you're talking about a complete and free program that can be downloaded and played ... I'd recommend "Arasan". It is fairly strong, free, and has its own GUI. (the best free programs that are very strong are probably "Crafty", "Zappa", and a beta version of "Rybka", but none of them have there own GUI as far as I know.
