Is there a general rule for ball position with the long irons?

I've been playing for many years, and still am not sure of ball position. I usually play the ball a few inches forward of center for the long irons, hands even with the ball at address.

  1. It's kind of an individual thing. If you read any books they are going to advocate positioning the ball a couple of inches inside your left heel.[For a right handed player] I think the best way is to set up to a tee in the ground ,positioned a couple of inches inside the left heel. Then close your eyes or look at the target and take a swing trying to take a small divot. Do this many times and average where you hit the ground in relation to the tee. Position your ball for the long irons accordingly.

  2. It really personal preference and the type of swing you have.  For me, It depends on the type of shot I am going to hit are going to hit.  If I am trying to hit it high and land soft, I will move it a ball or ball and a half forward of center.  Few inches seem like a lot. If I want to hit a low runner (AKA stinger), I put the ball in the middle of my stance.  If I am hitting a punch shot, trying to keep it under a branch, then I put it back in my stance.

But really it boils down to what is comfortable for you.

  3. It is dependent on the type of shot you want to hit.  With a low shot, you want to put it in the back of your stance.  Generally you would want to put the ball somewhat forward of the middle of your stance for a long iron shot.

  4. My pro say's think 3 wood position with the 2 and 3 irons.

  5. nope...generally longer irons are used with balls further up your stance.

  6. I play all of my irons in the middle of my stance. I allow the club to take care of the loft. If you need more loft than the club typically allows, then play the ball a little forward in your stance because the club has started its upswing and naturally has a little more loft at ball impact with the ball forward.

That being said, you could do the opposite to keep the ball lower. Just remember that all of these varriations add difficulty to your shot. This is why I keep it in the middle and then I don't have to worry about the added difficulty.

  7. yes there is a certain ball posotion......im only 13 so if u want to u could look for a better source but ive been playing since i was 3 and know alot about the game i am also on the varsity high school team so its up to you to believe me..........but yes there is a certain ball position for your long irons

long irons- just a few inches behind ur front foot

scoring (short) irons- center of your feet

woods- just inside ur front toe

    hope i helped

  8. bend the knees slightly and point your feet a lil towards the direction of the ball your hitting

  9. Yes, that sounds about right. You want the ball further up in your stance by your left foot. You don't want your feet to be too far apart. Just outside the shoulders. So basically, you are hitting the ball on the upswing and you can get a lofty, powerful long iron shot.

  10. Traditional teaching has always said that as the clubs get longer, you move the ball more forward in your stance. The short irons would be at center, the mid irons perhaps a ball forward of that, and the long irons two balls forward.

That said, there are a lot of thinking these days that the ball position should not move around

  11. no

  12. According to Jack Nicklaus the ball should be slightly inside the left heel for all irons.  But what does he know, he only won 18 majors.

The currently accepted wisdom is to move the ball further to the right as the irons get shorter, to help get backspin.

When chipping, keep the feet almost together, and position the ball right of the right foot.

    (assuming you are right handed)
