I believe it was conflicts between Catholics and Protestants.  But overall it was also government control.  There is a movie starring Liam Neeson.  About some Irish against the British during WWII or before, the name of the movie is **** Collins.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley is not about the Northern Ireland conflict:  it's about the Irish Civil War which happened in the 1920s and is a completely different thing.  In The Name Of The Father is good.

What is a protastant? There are Protestants in Northern Ireland who are members of the Christian faith.

You wont get a good unbiased account from a movie, a good book will give you the information you need. It was never a religious conflict that was just a secondary coincidence.

To understand Northern ireland you need to go back to the start of the last century and the home rule issue the northern conenant and the treaty.

"The wind that shakes the barley" that many people mentioned is a very good film about the conflicts between Irish and English before/during the independence process, and so is "Michael Collins". But if you're looking for Catholics and Protestants, IRA and so on in NI, "I'd rather suggest In the name of the father", and for a bit of fun too "Breakfast on Pluto".

a point of note:

The conflict was really about National Identity and Nationhood, rather than about religous differences. Although the differences of identity ran along religous lines, but not exclusively.

'The Wind that shakes the Barley' is a good movie about how the conflict affected individuals in the Cork area.
