I have seen different / easier versions for recipes on the Web. However, I have yet to see a healther version. For example, low sugar, or low fat, or low calorie.

  1. I can't recall any of what you would call fattening Dim Sum !?!

Maybe you are eating too many of one kind at a sitting...Ask a Chinese friend to come up with a balanced choice that they would eat. You will not gain weight by eating Dim Sum like they do.

If you don't have a Chinese friend you can do what I do when I go to Chinatown...Go to one that is filled with Chinese and order something small at first. Sit near full tables and keep your eyes open on what they order. Point to the items that look interesting (waiters will give you a short answer on ingredients...they're pretty busy at a good place!)

Really, I cannot imagine why anyone would even think that Dim Sum is fattening. Chinese do not have weight problems in general and if they do it is probably a thyroid problem that affects only second generation Chinese-Americans that eat toomuch of OUR diet. Relax.

  2. Traditional Chinese dim sum (prepared in traditional ways) are fatten, some of them are deep fried dumplings and most of the fillings of the dim sum contain lard or small cubes of fat (from pork belly) in order to create the smooth & still curnchy texture.

Most Chinese desserts contain high sugar, especially mooncakes, you may try steamed egg custard (Cantonese style) or steamed egg white custard with milk and reduce the portion of sugar as mentioned in the recipes.
