Question:

Is there a hybrid subject as far as anyone knows between chemistry and physics?

What I mean is, biology and chemistry = a biochemist and biology and physics = a biophysicist

I was told that the cross was called chemical engineering, I've also seen the subjects chemical physics and physical chemistry.

Can anyone help, thanks in advance?

  2. Chemical engineering is not a cross between chemistry and physics.  As the name suggests, it is a cross between chemistry and engineering, although it uses the principles of chemistry and of physics.

Chemical physics is concerned largely with spectroscopy, photochemistry, and other phenomena related to the energies of atoms and molecules.  Physical chemistry is more concerned with statistical properties, thermodynamics, reaction rates and mechanisms, and electrochemistry.

However, all these borderlines are very fuzzy. The world does not come neatly divided into different "disciplines", and the most vigorous growth areas are often at the boundaries between them.

  3. Quantum physics does entail SOME knowledge of both, but not in a traditional way.

Astronomy deals heavily in physics, and some of it's subcategories can use chemistry (astronomical bodies do obey the laws of physics,  and stars produced the elements, and the atmospheric composition of the various planets may or may not be of interest to you.)

I'm not sure if there is any one science that blends the two evenly.  Hopefully, you were able to get some ideas for consideration though.

  4. Physiochemist

  5. Nanophysics.

  6. There are several areas where the two overlap. In fact one could argue that Chenistry is a special case of Physics and All may be explained by Mathematics! Quantum mechanics is relevant to Chemical bonding theory as well as explaining atomic structure, phase equilibriia are inportant in both sciences, Crystallography is important in both as well as geology. Periodicity is an essential concept in inorganic chem as well as atomic structure in Physics. Radiochemistryis an important branch of chemistry with obvious Physics components. Many other examples I cant think of right now.

  7. physical chemistry is the best cross of both......trust me i used to work in that field.......It does mean learning some none chemistry, and non physics things (they are just kindof specifically used in physical chemistry)
