  1. I work with stroke victims who often are only able to curse after some damage to the brain. The interesting part of the phenomenon is that it tells us that the place in the brain for everyday language and the place in the brain for swearing are separate. When I work with clients, I let them know that swearing is the language of pain. It's the language to use when you stub your toe or get emotionally hurt. While we can take these words and use them in our daily vernacular, they are most effective when they accompany pain. It is the language that will get someone out of your space when you feel threatened, and it's the language that will express your rage when it's bottled up. While I am not a linguist, I would suspect that all cultures have developed a steam release through swearing.

  2. Shyriiwook is a language spoken by the Wookiee race. I don't think I've ever heard Chewbacca said a bad word.

  3. Jehovah's Witnesses, worldwide, 6.7 million speak the one, pure language ( of truth).  Their Bible explanations are consistent in any language - a unique trait human wide.

    Their culture uses no profanity.

  4. esperanto

    all cultures have insults

  5. What do you mean by "bad" words? Every language must contain some sort of negative connotation if it is to accurately portray reality and be useful. (Perhaps Saper-Whorf (/sp) would be interesting to bring into this discussion, but I'm too lazy to write several paragraphs here about what I can and can not imagine would affect the development of a language other than my own.)

If you mean curse words that is tricky. I had a professor who worked with the Cherokees and liked to joke that they had no "curse" words. That is not to say they couldn't reflect on a negative event enthusiastically, but apparently they learned the concept of cursing as we think of it from the western Europeans.

  6. no~there can be no good if there is no 'bad'.

  7. No there isn't. All languages have "bad" words in one way or another. I met a woman from Russia at work, and she said in her country people that cussed went to jail every time because it's illegal. She said even tourists get warned, fined, and maybe even jailed for repeated offenses. For the first offense(russian citizens) have to go to jail for 5 days, but the more they cuss the more time they get. That's crazy!

  8. To tell you the truth there is nothing in this world called bad. We keep all different names for  sort of craps. Good or Bad is wat we take. According to me there is nothing bad in this universe.

  9. None, it is too impossible to have a language that has no bad words.

  10. Absolutely none at all.
