  1. they can do it

  2. No,

    cops lie all the time.

  3. "cop" is not an official term

    You have witnesses??

  4. No.  Cops often disguise themselves in order to feret out crime.  do you really think the mafia can avoid undercover cops by simply asking a new person if he is a cop?  Get real.  BTW, whenever someone asks this question, it turns out they are a hooker.  How's business?

  5. cops are allowed to lie in discharging any of their duties.

that is an absolute rule, and they can do it at their discretion.

keep that in mind in any interactions with cops - they are not obligated to tell you honest answers to your questions.

  6. Ever heard of an undercover cop?  How would a cop ever be undercover if he/she had to tell all the bad guys they were a cop in the first place

    Please use some common sense.

  7. No, the police can use deception during the course of their job.  Mikesco is right on.

  8. I never cease to be amazed at the information people are willing to post here.

    Yes, we can use deception.

We cannot, however, lie to our heart's content despite what people here would have you believe.  The courts closely scrutinize the deceptions we use and if we stray too far out of bounds we normally lose what we gained through the lie.

We can certainly lie to you about whether or not we are law enforcement officers during an investigation.  If you choose to tell someone something because they tell you they're not the cops, you do so at your own peril.

  9. Nope, nearly every word out a cops mouth is a lie or a trick like when they stop you and say "Do you know why I pulled you over?" They are trying to trick you into admitting you committed a crime.

  10. No, it is not illegal for a police officer to lie about being a police officer. In fact, it is very common when they work under cover.

  11. Yes. It is misrepresentation of facts. However, they are not obligated to divulge information if they are plainclothes officers.  At the same time, they cannot deny it or lie about it either if asked. Any person that is authorized to arrest is an officer of the Law.Whether you call them a cop or detective, does not change the fact. And that would be lying if he expressly misinformed you.

  12. In the course of doing our duty we are allowed to lie. Lying under oath is however cause for being de-certified. But officers are certainly allowed to lie about being a police officer, it's only common sense.
