  1. i have been to cancun 7 times...as long as you stay in the hotel zone the water is perfectly okay to drink...you can always go downdown and buy water etc...at walmart...thats what we do.....

  2. Rather than a legal solution .... try a financial solution

Much of the world has unsafe drinking water.  It's a combination of culture and money

  3. Household bleach will take care of some, but not all of the bacteria and bad taste in water. It's better than nothing for questionable water sources. In Mexico bottled water is available virtually everywhere.Off the beaten path I carry a MSR 'Sweetwater' portable water filter if I am going to be away from a reliable source of clean drinking water whether I'm in the US, Mexico, Canada,Guatemala, etc.

  4. NO ONE drinks the tap water in Mexico.  Everyone uses bottled water.  if you are going on vacation in a tourist area, the hotels, resorts, restaurants all use bottled water.  There will be bottled water in your hotel room to use to brush your teeth.  The ice cubes will be made from bottled water.

  5. If you go to Cancun, all the resorts have filtered water. We brush our teeth with it, shower and eat at the resorts. If we want to drink plain water, we always use bottle water. I imagine they cook with the filtered water.

People get sick not from the water but from drinking to much and over eating. Watch those drinks with coconut. It's a natural laxative.)

  6. whoa bad idea.. nobody drinks tap water in mexico or the ice cubes...

  7. Iodine tablets are used for water purification and are legal. (At least in every country I know.) You can pick them up at outdoors/camping shops.

Read the instructions on the packaging, but generally it's 1-2 tablets into a litre (roughly a quart) of water. Leave it stand and disolve for 2-3 minutes and it should be safe to drink. If the water is cloudy or cold, you need to use more tablets and let it stand for longer.

Note that you must NOT use Iodine tablets on pregnant women and children or on people who have a thyroid problem.

Also, Iodine gives the water a taste which many people (myself included) think is gross.

It's best to just buy bottle water from the stores in Mexico. So long as the seal is not broken it's perfectly safe for drinking. Just ask for "Agua purificada."

  8. Bottled water in Mexico and ice cubes in restaurants are safe. If you are going to places like deep jungles where there are no services, bring your own. No purification product is completely safe. Tourist destinations pay close attention to water safety.
