  1. CIA

  2. http://searches.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

Social security death index is on this page (free).  It can be a month or two behind, and it includes almost all deaths in the US between the early 1960s, and today.  It is just an index, not the certificate (which is restricted to family members/ next of kin).  Nothing illegal at all about searching the records here. You also can search local newspapers for obits, but that is not guaranteed.

If they are not on the index, you can also try www.zabasearch.com.. again.. not fool proof.

This of course, is for the US only.  UK has a birth/marriage/death index, not sure of the details.

  3. If you know the county and state where the person may have died you can contact the historical or genealogical society in that county. Most societies keep an index of local deaths.

  4. take a walk in the cemetery ?

  5. If the person ever had social security and died, they will be listed on the social security death list. Finding the correct website for this can be tricky, but it can be done--I've done it.

  6. death certificate

  7. If the relative is from the US, try the FREE interactive website for SSDI.gov (the Social Security Death Index)

  8. just go to your county's/towns morgue.

i think you'll need a legit reason why though.
