  1. In UK, the Insurance Industry has set up a common database .. they record all your insurance details and all claims .. (the stated aim is to reduce fraudulent claims .. they are trying to catch the crooks who claim on multiple policies for the same loss or who put in serial fraudulent claims, one at a time, each to a different insurance company)

So when you claim, the company you claim from will search the database to see if you have any other relevant Insurance .. and if you do, the b*stards will write back denying liability and suggesting you to claim off the OTHER Insurance ..

Needless to say, when you contact the other lot, they will do exactly the same ...

Eventually, after much delay and threats to take them to court, the two companies may agree to meet some portion (eg half)   of you claim each ...

  2. In the USA, travel insurance policies have a standard policy provision that limits you to one policy for the same company for the same trip.  So if you bought the second policy from the same company one of them, at your choice, would be void but if you bought it from a different company than both policies would be valid.

  3. If you had gone to a broker then they would have advised you of the best options. I am assuming that you have not as you may have purchased a policy that does not meet your 'demands and needs'. Insurance should be left to the professionals. If, of course, you were not told about the requirement that a couple is two people living at the same address then you may have grounds for a complaint. Obviously if the information was there and you did not bother reading it then that is your own fault.

There is nothing illegal in having two travel insurance policies. If you CAN make a claim on both then each will normally pay a proportionate amount of the claim (and of course you will be deducted two excesses). I assume you have gone past the period during which you can obtain a refund on the first policy - if not you can claim the money back.

  4. Generally speaking, to qualify as a "couple", you should be residing at the same address.  The chances are you obtained a cheaper rate by selecting a 'couple' insurance policy, whereas, strictly speaking, you should be obtaining quotes under the 'group of people' category.

Consequently, if you have obtained cheaper terms by making an inaccurate declaration, your insurers have the right to decline any claim.

I suggest you contact them, be upfront, explain the situation and ask them to adjust the policy to give proper cover.  There's no point paying out for two or more policies when just being honest negates the need for any duplication.

  5. It should say in the policy, but you should be fine.  No such thing as having too much coverage.  Some policies may say something about being primary or tertiary to other coverages you just have to read the policy rider.
