No, I don't think it would be worth while to rent a car. The train from Milan to Como is reliable, and there's some beautiful scenery. You'd be missing out on some lovely sights by not getting the train. Also, the Milanese are notorious for road-rage so I honestly don't think it'd be wise. They're lovely otherwise, I just wouldn't want to be driving the same lane as them! haha. There is parking available in Como, though it's limited and if you're unfamiliar with the area it'd be difficult to find. The train is a must, it's one of the nicest train journeys you'll ever experience! Enjoy!

You may want to hire a car to drive around lake Como to visit the different villages...they're all beautiful...but listen the advice of an Italian man (I lived 80km from Milan I've been there lots of times but never in the car) leave the car in Como and jump on the train. The public transport network in Milan its good enough, but if you feel adventurous then GOOD LUCK!!! About the parking you will find it relatively easy in Como but you will have the usual difficulties everywhere else around the lake...but I don't think its bad enough not to rent a car. No, it's bloody hard work and the roads around the lake are dead narrow as well.
