Is there a market out there for a column like Carrie's in "s*x and the City?"?

I really enjoy writing, and while trying to figure out what I could do to make a career out of my type of writing (more reflection and observational stuff) I figured out, that's kind of like what Carrie does.

So I was wondering, is that just a TV thing, or could a real person make a real career out of that?

  1. Yes, it is called a newspaper column. Flip through your local paper, and you will see lots of columns, some local and some nationally syndicated. There are advice columns, gardening columns, politics columns, etc.

Thing is, newspapers are dying out. In my area all of the local papers are offering buyouts to their employees. They can't compete with free content on the internet.

What you can do is start a blog, which is pretty much the same thing as a column but on the internet. If you build up a large enough following, you can make money off of advertising.

  2. There is always a market for good writing.  There are currently writers doing this in some media markets.  If you are looking to do this, I suggest finding an Internet news site to write for.  Unfortunately people don't read the newspaper as much any more.  I just canceled my subscription because everything I read in the newspaper, I already read online.

  3. Yes I would read it.
