i was just wondering. I know Kevlar is quite hard to destroy but can it be damaged at all?

  1. what about vacuum?

  2. It depends on what the temperature of the lava is.

The average temp of Hawaiian lava is 1150 Celsius, according to a Wiki Answers page, and there are many metals and alloys which require higher temps in order to melt.

    See list here:

  3. How bout the space shuttle ceramic thermal tiles? I'm sure it could withstand at least a couple minutes in lava...

  4.   There is no known substance that could exist in that environment.

  5. Kevlar will melt quite readily .it is a synthetic fiber.it is a very strong fiber, however it's strength as much as anything comes from the way it is woven ,it gets get strength from it's weave, also in some applications has a wire mesh for added reinforcement.every solid will melt it's just a matter of getting it hot enough. gold can be melted down but it will not bind with any other element,so you could throw a lump of gold into your volcano and retrieve it later but it's going to get blended in all that lava,so you might not find it but it won't burn ,it will still be there.the so called noble gases(helium,argon,krypton,3 more i don't remember) don't readily bind with other elements either though it can be done in the lab ,it usually doesn't happen naturally ,and also remember matter like energy can't be created or destroyed,it just reconfigures into new compounds..........tom
