I am 17 and I really want to learn how to surf. I live in New York and there are beaches here with people surfing. Is it too late for me to learn? How much would you estimate does it cost for someone like me to learn the basics? How long would it take, do you think? Thanks alot!

  1. Well actually its like skate boarding and you need to learn at a real young age see my step brothers sister is 12 and can surf in Australian Championship finals I can get into tournaments in Florida and I'm sponsored by Ginkgo's boards

off the coast of Gulf of Mexico and took 5yrs to go in a barrel wave and about broke my arm in Florida nationals so I'd not start in less your 5.

  2. Thats bull you dont need to start surfing when your 5. You can start surfin whenever you want, within reason though. It'll take you about maybe 6 months of solid surfing to grasp most of the basics and after that youll be pretty competent.  Read a few books on technique, it might help a bit.

  3. no nor is there a min age i learned when i was twelve so i say go ahead i would try it its sooooo fun!!

  4. NO

  5. I have a Surf friend who is 86! He's just as good as me and he has a Hunchback!

  6. I really need to know also! I won a surfboard at a local raffle, and I want to learn how to use it. If I were you, I would ask some people surfing on the beaches what questions you have. They are probably the best people to ask because they've been through it already.

Of course you can still learn! Is there a maximum age to ride a bike. No, but older people may get hurt as they become older (I'm talking 60+) So, as long as you're up for the soreness and risk of it all, go for it!

If I find out any info, I'll edit this.

Oh, and good luck! I Wish I could be of more assistance.

  7. My goodness! You're just a youngster. There are surf instructors in Hawaii who regularly teach 60 and70 year old people how to surf. There is no maximum age, it all has to do with being healthy, and having good balance. If you're reasonably fit, you should have no problems at all. The surf instructors in Hawaii have people up and surfing in an hour. From there, it's just a matter of experience. Keep working at it until you get good enough to know that you need more instruction, then find a good coach (or join a good club) and take the next step.

    Have fun!

  8. No WAY! Go at it and rip it up! It depends on your motivation on time! Cost... free if you have a friend that surfs! Good luck!

  9. Well, I don't live in your area and I've never surfed before, but here is some general advice.

If you want to learn you can. Just because you didn't take up lessons when you were 3 doesn't mean you can't learn how to surf. You might not be the next teen pro but if you want to simply learn, you do whatever you put your mind to. I have no idea how much it would cost, you'd have to shop around for that one.

As far as how long I think it would take, that would probably depend on how good at balance you think you are, your physical agility, how well you pick up on things etc. I'm sure it's different with every person.

Good luck, and if you learn you should let me know, I want to learn how too lol.

  10. Of course not! 17 is really young. I've heard of people in their 60s learning to surf. Go for it!

It dosn't take long to learn the basics but it takes years of practice to be good at it. Just like anything.

As for costs, check out local surf places in your area and compare there prices for lessons. If any of your friends surf maybe you could get them to teach you for free, or less than lessons would cost.

    Good Luck!
