Is there a meaning behind the tiger and the dragon?

I see many tattoo pictures and posters of the tiger and the dragon together. I think of them as fierce and powerful.

They're symbols of the higher and lower nature (mind and body, basically), branded on the inner forearms during the "graduation ceremony" from the Shaolin Temple.  The monk uses his arms to lift and carry a scalding hot cauldron decorated with the dragon (mind, left arm) and tiger (body, right arm).  As most Asian systems of unarmed combat are derived from Shaolin kung fu (this is a simplification, but essentially true), the motif has spread throughout martial arts culture.

The Han people is actually a mixture of many ancient tribes from all over China. Tribes from the west, including the tribe of the Yellow Emperor, worshiped the tiger, while those along the eastern seashore worshiped the dragon. Of course, there were many other tribes with different totems. After many wars of expansion, these tribes gradually mixed to form the Han nationality. Because tribes worshiping the tiger and dragon were more powerful, other totems disappeared, while these two continued to exist.

The tiger is often considered a symbol of a god, while the dragon in almost all ancient cultures was the symbol of a Goddess.

one explantion is they are part of the four elements and the four seasons and the four compass ponits there is four animals that represent them to but the tiger and gdragon is linked to the wind element its all so complecated
