I have a problem with the lever that turns on my car's brights?

I have a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire GT, and now the lights do not work. The switch to turn on the lights is on a lever. When I pull the lever back, the brights turn on, but do not stay on when I let it go. The daytime running lamps still work however.

Does anyone know what the problem is, and how much it costs to fix?

  1. more than likely you'll have to replace the lever. ebay.com

  2. Go to the junkyard and find one there it will be alot cheaper.

  3. take it apart and figure out what holds it in place when you let go of it. more than likely its broke. and more than likely you can fix it with JB weild or some other epoxy. If you can fix the problem your self than you will save yourself some money. If not than you could get a new part online or at an autoshop and put it in your self. Or, just take it to the shop!

  4. Jordan-

When I worked in the parts department for Chevrolet the Cavaliers used to have the same problems.  They are the same car as your Sunfire and use many of the same hardware parts.

The fix is not just the lever as the other person told you.  Unfortunately you are going to have to replace the entire switch, which means removal of the steering wheel.  Depending on the options that are on that car, that switch can get pretty pricey too.

I owned a 1996 S-10 and it took the same part number in my case as the Cavalier.  Plan on the switch running close to $200.00, and even more if you have Cruise Control, as the switch has this part in it too.

The only place to get the switch is at your Pontiac Dealer, and I would suggest letting them do the install too.  Mainly because you are going to deal with the Air-Bag Module in the wheel.

    Good Luck.

  5. it's the main light switch most likely, check the maxi-fuses under the hood first.since you still have flash to pass function on the lever,i say the pivot is o.k.which is a good thing ,they are a b!#$h to replace.

not sure how much a switch is but auto zone or o'reilly will be the cheapest, you should be able to do it if you have torx bits and a good 1/4/in. drive tool set.

  6. The "clicker" inside the dim switch is shot. Go to the junkyard or parts store and order up a new one. Your looking at around 100-150 to replace.

Teknoman Saber, yes it is the clicker. All you need to do is go get a new one, not only from dealer, but parts store.
