Question:

Is there a mechanic out there? How can you tell if there is too much damage to your car?

I drive a 05 dodge stratus. The other day I was rear-ended hard. My entire trunk is smashed in, back windshield blown out, gas `cover bent (damage to both back sides obviously). My question is will my insurance fix this or will it be totaled? I'll find out soon I guess, but I was hoping someone out there might know the answer.

  1. It depends if the chassis has become twisted. And if it's mainly just body panels or if it's much more major structural damage, which there probably will be. Depends on the value of the car too

If it's totalled, try taking anything off of the car that's undamaged (Wheels, radio, seats etc) and sell them seperately to make back some money. Ebay would be an idea to try sellling the parts on

    Good Luck

  2. they'll probably fix it

  3. It will depend on how the insurance company asseses the damage, if the cost of repair outweighs the value of the vehicle, thay will total it.

  4. well if you have insurance(who doesn't?) than it will cover the cost. now the damage seems pretty bad. i wouldn't say it's totaled. your lucky you didn't get hit that hard in the front. now if the front was hit that bad than ur engine would be messed up so that would be totaled, but the back isn't so bad.the repair shop can just take off the broken parts, do some frame work, fix the dents, watever is needed, its a pretty easy fix. long but not to hard. the cost isn';t very friendly wither but i think the insurance will cover more than the cost will come out. so the question is do you still want to keep the stratus or get a new car?

  5. IF THE COST OF REPAIRS IS OVER 1/2 THE COST OF THE CAR THEY WILL TOTAL IT.

  6. I don't think anyone can answer without seeing the car. Just a guess without seeing. Hope your ok.

  7. First it depends on how much the car is worth - you can look that up at various sites like edmunds.com.

You or the insurance company will need an estimate done on doing repairs.  If they are all cosmetic, the car will be repaired.  If the frame is bent - then the car may be considered totalled - or if the total cost to do the repairs exceeds it's value (not what you owe by the way).

  8. If the cost of the repair even gets close to the cost of the car, they'll write it off. After they pay you off, they'll sell off the wrecked car to recover some costs.

  9. no they,ll probably total that one, anytime one is damaged that bad all the way up to the gas tank lid they usually total them out,it would cost more to fix it than its worth,so i don't think you,ll be getting that car back, they will replace that one, they know it wouldn't be wise to try and repair it,you would probably have problems from that car even after they repaired it,but the final say will still be up to them on it,good luck.

  10. It all depends on who your insurance carrier is.  Some companies will total a vehicle out while a different company might fix it.

  11. Todays vehicles are built with a uni-body frame which is designed to crumple and absorb the impact of a hit. With the damage you are describing my best guess is that the vehicle will be totaled. It will be the other persons insurance that should pay for the damage since they rear-ended you. If the vehicle is borderline repairable (close to the totaled out value) you may be able to demand that the vehicle be fixed, check with your insurance carrier because they would be the ones to help you fight for that. Good Luck
