  1. Hi Noodles, I just took a look at the BT site and it looks like you have to sign up for a minimum of 12 months.  The FAQ page http://bt.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bt.cfg/ph... also states "Ceasing your BT line before the end of a 12-month contract means you would still be liable for the remainder of the 12-month line rental charge, or £70, whichever is the lower" - so it is not easy to get out of it.

If you decide to keep your BT line there are alternatives to their landline services. We recommend using Vonage - you can use our service  using your broadband connection and we will give you a separate number to your BT one. You will be able to make cheap unlimited calls and there is no need to switch your computer on to make calls either.

Full details of our call plans can be found at  http://www.vonage.co.uk/ and we are presently offering a 30 day money back guarantee so feel free to try our service.

  2. Yes BT have cottoned on to the fact people are installing lines then moving to much cheaper providers such as TalkTalk and Tiscali.

So now when you sign up they put you in a 12 month minimum contract.

YOu can pay £70 to break free and move, or alternatively you can still ask your new provider if they just supply voice calls only.

That way you arent breaking any service agreements with BT as you will still be paying the line to them
