Question:

Is there a morning after pill for dogs?

My male weimaraner got my female pregnant earlier this year, and she had puppies in April. We made an appointment for her to get spayed August 19th, but she went into heat last tuesday (August 12th). We have been keeping a close eye on the two dogs and have kept a doggie diaper on her while she's in the house. Well, yesterday morning my boy ripped the diaper off her, and they locked up. Now I don't know what to do. The first pregnancy wasn't planned, and obviously I don't want her pregnant again. Is there any kind of morning after pill for dogs? My vet won't spay dogs when they're in heat, so I had to reschedule her appointment. Also, I'm worried about how bad this could be on her body. She just had puppies four months ago, and I don't want to put her through body through any unnecessary problems. How likely is it that she got pregnant this soon after having puppies? Are they extra fertile during their first heat after puppies? I'm sorry for all the questions - I'm just really concerned for her. Thanks!

  1. There is a "morning after" shot, but my vet does not recommend it because the side effects can be pretty bad, including pyometra.

If it were me, I would find a vet that WILL spay her immediately.

  2. Most vets will do an "emergency spay".  Especially if it's a short time since the mating, there will be no adverse affects on her getting spayed now versus if she hadn't recently mated.  I"m not aware of any "morning after" pills for dogs.

As for the fertility, I can't answer those questions as I've never bred.  However if you tell your vet your situation they should be able to both help and enlighten.

  3. Yes  there is,,  but it is an injection,,and has to be administered within 72 hours of a mating,,had a scare last year with mine,,little rascal escaped with neighbours male in persuit,  , rang vet,, who told me about it and administered it,,   and spayed her following month no more worries..

add- Also this injection can  effect her fertility, and make it harder to conceive in future,,but as i had no plans to breed,,she is our pet,,,this did not effect me,,,

  4. Honestly, if you don't know things like this, you shouldn't be breeding *period*. Bloodlines don't make the dog. Your dogs need to be ofa tested and cleared, show PERFECTLY in the ring in three categories, and they need to be proven of breeding quality.

  5. Call your vet and tell him you think she might be pregnant so you want her spayed to avoid puppies. (This will both spay her and abort the puppies.)
