Question:

Is there a museum where visitors can see inside an Avro Lancaster WWII Bomber?

I'd like to have firsthand experience of the dimensions and layout inside the Avro Lancaster (I'm doing research for a book) which is a British four-engined bomber plane used during the Second World War. Does anyone know of any Lancasters in the UK where members of the public are allowed to go inside the planes?

  1. Calgary, in Canada.

  2. There is an air museum in Hobart New Zealand that has one. My son spent some time in it when he was in the Navy.

  3. Funny,I checked this out a while back while looking for bombers on display in the U.S. Unfortunately, the only ones I can find over here are American. I don't know if these are open to the public but, even if they normally aren't, usually it isn't too hard to arrange a special tour with museums if you call ahead. Here are a couple of locations I have notes on:

Theres a great one at the RAF Museum in Hendon.

There's one at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre,  RAF East Kirkby

There may be more, but I do know both of those are well maintained.I think the one at the Lincolnshire museum is still taxied occasionally.

    Good luck with your hunt!

  4. Probably the easist one to gain access to is at the Imperial War Museum on Lambeth Road, London.  They just have the fuselage section which you can walk through.

Most museums won't let you in the aircraft due to liability, radiation, etc.  Both BBMF at Coningsby and East Kirby might allow access.  I work at RAF Museum Hendon but you wouldn't be allowed unfortunately inside our Lancaster.

  5. Imperial War Museum, Duxford supposedly has one.

Smile, bat your eyes, let them know what an important journalist you are, and what great press they'll get out of it.

    Good luck.
